A Moment with a Monster
An MC Monster, that is. On this monster of a Monday I had a chance to ask the artist himself a few questions about his amazing characters, how he creates them and how you all can get an original from him. And I’m sure after you see them, you will be a follower of his art. And spoiler alert, he may, may, be coming to a city near you soon..
An interview with an artist:
Q: Can you tell me a little bit about the characters you create?
“The monsters I create aren’t evil entities, but more of like watchful protectors, leaders or guides through the spiritual realm.”
My favorite piece, I picture it as a moment between the big guy and myself..
Q: When did you begin creating them?
“I started playing around with this style in June 2017, after my little sister passed away.”
Q: What process do you use to create these wonderful characters?
“The process is more often then not just winging it. I lay down a background, and then sort of just go for it. When I’m doing commission pieces I follow the ideas of the customers, but usually I don’t know what I’m doing until I start.”
Q: How often do you create and complete a piece?
“At the moment I’m averaging one painting a day, one piece usually takes me anywhere from three to six hours to complete.”
Q: Do you ever recreate a piece, or are they all MC Monster originals?
“I do recreate a piece, but none of them are ever identical, I add or subtract content if I’m doing something similar to a piece I have done in the past.”
Q: Can you tell me a little bit about how the commission process goes?
“What I do is, I let the clients send me some images of things I’ve done before that they like, or, they can also give me some ideas or elements that they’d like to be represented in the piece, and then I’ll pull everything together and work them out for them. I usually ask to keep their ideas general and not so specific so I have room to do what I want to do with the piece.”
Q: How do the auctions of your pieces that I see on Instagram work?
“I was doing online auctions for the last year, but recently I’ve been so busy with commissions that I haven’t had time. But when I am doing auctions, it’s usually about one every other day if not more, and I am exclusively doing them on Instagram.”
Q: I see you have an art tour coming up, can you tell me a bit about that?
“In 2017, I won the Pabst Blue Ribbon art can design contest. My designs were printed on thirty million cans and distributed in every state. So this art tour I’m on, (Dripped on the Road) (@dotheroad if you’re on Instagram) is being sponsored by PBR. The 2016 can winner Denton Burrows runs the tour with his partner. Basically it’s four artists traveling in an RV for a month from city to city painting murals.”
Q: Is creating these beautiful characters a full time a gig for you?
Painting these monsters has become a full time job so there really isn’t much else I can do, haha.
It is great to get to know an artist who creates something you love. It’s nice to know what they are thinking or the story behind the art they’ve created. It’s been a pleasure this past month or so to get to know a few. Thank you all, I appreciate you.

MC, thank you so much for not just sharing your art with me, but also your time. I’m always looking forward to seeing your next piece. And, I don’t take commissions exactly, but if you have some crazy subject you want me to write about for you then I’m on it. 😊
