A Yeti of Many Names

As I was rolling through YouTube the other day  I stumbled on a little gem. At first I thought it was the Abominable Snowman starring Peter Cushing. Alas, I wasn’t that lucky. This movie was called The Snow Creature. Staring no one you care about. This movie was about a scientist who was leading an expedition in the Himalayas to find and study the plant life that could be growing in such harsh conditions. Seems like a sound plot so far. Unfortunately that is the last sound thing happening in this movie. After a night or two the Sherpa who are guiding the expedition see Yeti footprints by the tents and get immediately anxious. They want to leave but the scientists decides to follow the tracks and take home an even better discovery than plants. The natives explain to them that the Yeti come down from the mountain and steal their woman. Really? No female Yeti anywhere? And for a movie made in 1954 the implications of that statement are pretty bold for the time. 

The Sherpa also told them the many names the Yeti go by. I wrote them down are you ready? There was Snow giant, Creature of snow, semi-human, Phantom of the Himalayas, Marauder of women, Abominable and Human snowman. I think that’s all but I may have missed a couple. 

The Yeti doesn’t help his cause here when he actually comes and marauders, actually stealing a women. The Sherpa drag the scientist on a long trek to find the wife of a guides brother. 

They follow his tracks all the way to the Yeti’s home, a cave filled with bones. When the Yeti comes back to his home, they bash him in the head and the scientist decides that, since he is such a failure as a botanist (his words) to take him back to America as a better discovery. They put him on a  stretcher and take back to the village. They decide they will give him “hypos” (their word) so they can keep him out cold to get him home. 

Now before this gets more ridiculous we should probably talk about the creature a bit. When we first see him, the scene is dark but I’m pretty sure they used the same costume as the original Wolfman. And I’m not sure because it was dark, but I think he was wearing clothes as well.

But I guess he could be because part of the Sherpas story was that he used to be human but then turned Yeti. Don’t ask me how that process takes place, but it would explain why he was most likely wearing clothes. 

But let’s not worry about the clothes thing because this movie blew that out of your mind by taking on the monumental task of classifying what a Yeti actually is. Can you believe it? All this time we have been debating this issue and all we had to do was watch this movie! Who knew? 

When the scientists finally get him to America he is held by California’s Department of Immigration, because he technically is an illegal alien. I mean, he is from another country I guess. To solve the riddle of what he is so they can decide what to do about citizenship, they called in an anthropologist. He concludes that he is definitely not human, he does not have a calculating brain. They classify him as a Snow Creature and...are you ready? They call him, a legend. Well,

I’m glad they solved that one. No one at all ever thought he was a legend already. 

And this legend is more clever and more calculating than they suspected. He is able to escape from all of them, and the police are stumped as to why they can’t find him, because as they say, “it’s not  like he can blend in at a bar or a hotel or something. He doesn’t have wings so he can’t fly.” I’m really amazed at how calmly they all are about finding and subsequently losing a Yeti. I mean they are not shocked or scared at all. If only everyone in the bigfoot community would watch this so we were all on the same page of his species classification...a  legend, imagine that. And that it’s nothing to overact over. Huh?  Anywho the Legend and Snow Creature heads to our sewers as all good monsters do, where we eventually catch up to him. And from here I’ll leave it to your  imagination or until you get a chance to watch it.
